Most Crock pots that I have seen whether the original or other similar types are usually slow cookers with no other function so I was interested when I saw that there was such a thing as the Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker, 5.6 L – Silver. The features of this 5 in 1 multi-cooker might change your mind if you’re wondering about buying a slow cooker as it can be a very useful kitchen appliance. We will be reviewing what this multi-cooker can do and if you’re not looking for a pressure cooker whether it can compete with other multi-cookers.

This Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker 5.6 litre has a good looking stainless steel outer with the led display on the front, it would fit nicely on anyone’s kitchen counter. It is a good oblong shape which helps when fitting in your joints of meat or baking trays. It’s a large 5.6 litre capacity which allows you to make a good size stew, enough for 5-6 people and the handles make it no problem to lift out and serve at the table.
The inner pot is a non-stick aluminium which makes it light enough to carry even when full and it’s also dishwasher-safe. There is a transparent lid so you can easily see the status of your cooking, the unit also comes with a roasting/steaming rack which can sit at 2 different heights low so you can use it to roast meat or higher for steaming fish or vegetables. There is also a rice measuring cup for when you want to use the multi-cooker as a rice cooker and a crock pot multi cooker recipe book with some recipes for you to try.
The Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker has 5 cooking functions similar to the pressure cooker multi-cookers, which makes it a flexible tool in the kitchen. You can roast, steam, bake, saute/sear and slow cook, in fact the hardest bit is finding the time to cook all the different things it allows. To set which cooking option you want and to set the temperature or time is easy with the touch button controls on the front of the unit which has a backlit display making it very easy to read when you want to know how long there is left to cook.
It’s easy to sear your food to seal it before you slow cook or even roast, you just need to select the sear function, set the temperature level to hi and add some oil in the base of the pot and start cooking. Once you have browned your meat you can add your other ingredients before you start to slow cook, you can choose hi or low cooking and set the timer to the time you want. When the cooking comes to an end it will go into a keep warm mode till you’re ready to serve.
Well you would expect the crock-pot to be a slow cooker but would you expect it to be a steamer? The steam rack included is a good size to hold a good selection of vegetables or fish all you need to do to use it is to add water into the pot and add your steam tray so it’s at the higher level and out of the water. Select the steam button and put on the lid to give it time to heat up. Once it starts to produce steam add you fish onto the rack, replace the lid and cook for the required time. There’s nothing to stop you cooking some vegetables at the same time and you can produce a whole meal to finish at the same time.
One of the best things about this crock pot express multi-cooker is the fact that it can be a mini oven and you can use it to roast or to bake. It’s very easy to roast a joint of meat in here, prepare your meat by coating it in oil and rubbing in any herbs or seasoning you would like for flavour, add it to the rack in the low position and you can use the space left on the rack to add vegetables. Select roast and then set the temperature you require using the arrow keys, the temperature shows in Celsius and you can’t change it to Fahrenheit, you can set the time add the lid and let it roast.
If you want to bake a cake, no problem, as long as the baking pan fits in the pot you can bake in it. A small loaf pan will fit in it so you can even bake bread.
Is it cheaper to use this multi-cooker compared to the traditional oven?
Definitely, as long as what you’re making fits into the bowl it takes less power to heat the smaller area of the inner pot than the size of your normal kitchen oven.
Many people feel that this is a great cooker for a busy lifestyle, brown your meat and vegetables, add your ingredients and set it cooking so it’s ready to eat when you come in from work, and you only have one pot to clean the end of it. It heats up quickly and cleans up easily with it’s non stick coating. The unit is not too large to store on the worktop.
The biggest negative found by some customers is the inner pot, some people have found after a few months the non stick lining can start to peel off. Some people find it hard to remove the rack when hot. This is only a small percentage of people who have reviewed this Crock-pot and the majority love it.
This Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker, 5.6 L – Silver is a great size of multi-cooker that can be suitable for a large family, it’s great as a slow cooker but comes into it’s own with it’s ability to roast and bake. It can be useful for money saving if you like to roast smaller quantities and don’t want to use your large oven. It can be a great choice for people who don’t have much in kitchen facilities like students where you can use all of the cooking options and have the ability to be able to cook meals easily from scratch.
